December : Tufi Papua New Guinea Fiord diving with some outer reefs.
This was a thirdtrip to PNG in the last 9 years. It was a pleasant surprise
seeing the new terminals running but a couple of the girls in the group had a
slight run in with the customs officers when declaring the foods we brought
from Bangkok. No pork products allowed what so ever!!! This is what
happens when we are too honest! Hilights included a face to face encounter
with a Tiger shark and a lone hammerhead. The accommodation, food and
staff were first rate. The diving would’ve been excellent if we didn’t have to
fight the squalls in the slow boat every day.

This was the 3rd trip to PNG for Peak and myself but first time for the others.
Our group wanted to do a resort holiday so Tufi was our choice as I’ve never been to this part of the country before.

After a day’s shopping in SIN we caught the PX? Flight direct to Port
Moresby. Arriving early morning we waited over an hour before taking a
chartered flight to Tufi air strip. The flight was quick allowing us to view the
beautiful mountainous terrain until we reached the Tufi coastline and its
    fjords.

Diving at Tufi can be divided into 2 categories: fjords with its wonderful muck
and clear blue waters with reefs and pelagics. On the few days without
squalls the visibility of the outer reefs was fantastic from 80-200 ft. vis.
When waves were too big we decided to do muck diving in the fjords as well
as the jetty in front of the dive centre.

I believe we were the first Thai group to dive Tufi but certainly won’t be the
last as prices are very reasonable. We also learnt quite a sure fire way to call the sharks from the depth as demonstrated by the dive guides there.
