NAUI
Leadership
Imagine an organization comprised
of dynamic men and women with unique
aquatic skills, a keen vision for
the future and an earnest desire
to help
others. Consider the word respect
and, for a moment, picture what
it takes
to earn the admiration of others
and feel good about yourself. If
you're
seeking opportunities for personal
growth and to learn more about diving,
we
invite you to become a member of
the National Association of Underwater
Instructors. There are two levels
of NAUI membership: leadership,
which
includes Skin Diving Instructor,
Assistant Instructor and Divemaster,
and the
most coveted and highest ranking
level, NAUI Instructor.
NAUI leadership requires a keen
insight into how people learn. It
also
requires extensive diving knowledge,
judgment and a deep-seated belief
that, when teaching a high-risk
activity like scuba, the way to
minimize risk is
to maximize education. It also requires
academic freedom.
An important part of NAUI leadership
is the ability to train each student
to
make independent and correct decisions
and value judgments regarding the
levels of personal risk inherent
in all types of diving situations.
Working within
the parameters of the most stringent
training standards in the recreational
diving community, NAUI leaders have
the knowledge and the freedom to
adapt their teaching to meet the
individual and regional needs of
their
students. This freedom can be frightening,
but to a NAUI leader, it is
exhilarating and makes for a truly
rewarding relationship between student
and instructor. A large portion
of your NAUI leadership training
will be
directed toward giving you the confidence
to be a truly dynamic leader and
educator.
Preparing
for NAUI Leadership
Gain Diving Experience
A broad background in varied diving
conditions will better prepare you
to
meet the watermanship demands of
NAUI leadership. Document your
experience and log all dives.
Increase your Diving Knowledge
Start a program of study, including
the Advanced Scuba Diver and Master
Scuba Diver programs, to give you
broad, up-to-date information on
all
aspects of diving.
Maintain Physical Fitness
Diving can be strenuous, and emergencies
may occur that require extra
effort.
Develop Speaking Ability
An ability to speak effectively
and comfortably in front of an audience
is
crucial to effective learning.
Continually Evaluate Yourself
Proper preparation and continual
re-evaluation is critical to the
successful
completion of a NAUI Leadership
course. Request the opportunity
to
demonstrate your competence and
receive feedback for improvement
from a
NAUI Instructor.
